Pop Art – Spark AR

Image processing beyond a color lookup table is something our team had not really played around with before the pop art filter. We found a tri-tone shader patch on Spark AR’s library of resources and set out to play around with it.

Shading Iterations

This filter progressed in steps of “wow this looks cool… but what if we added more?” We started with a tri-tone shader which made the camera look kind of like a comic, so we decided to lean into that. We added dots to the shading to give it that printed pop art feel, then wanted to add outlines. The outlines were the most difficult part of this filter since they were either too light and missing edges or too dark and unflattering, but it came down to tweaking values to get the best balance of the two.

Embracing Simplicity

Pop art is our most captured filter, meaning it’s the most popular one for users to take a picture with. Going forward from this, we’d love to explore more image processing methods and play around with stylized camera filters.
